Below is information about an exciting local contest using Scratch! Here is the link to get more information and to enter the contest: http://kidscodems.org/kids-code-2016-innovation-contest/
Kids Code Mississippi is launching our annual Innovation Month Contest. This year, we’re focusing on “FinTech” (Financial Technology). The details of the 2016 contest are as follows:
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
This contest is open to all Mississippi classrooms in grades 6-8. We ask that the project be worked on in a classroom setting and submitted as a classroom entry (not individual). Multiple entries from schools are allowed, but it is limited to one per classroom.
WHAT DO WE DO?
Well, it’s fairly simple. Using the free coding platform Scratch, your class will create a game/app designed to encourage kids to save their money. The apps can help users reach specific goals, give examples of what kind of items can be bought if a certain amount of money is saved, etc. If you want to get really bold, try creating an app that shows how interest works! The project should be interactive, in that a user actually has to do something in order for the app to function.
Participating classes should document their work and submit their entry below. This can be in the form of a video, written document, or mixed media. It’s up to YOU, so get creative! The final game/app will be posted by us to the Kids Code Mississippi website. The criteria for judging includes the creativity of the app and the use of code in developing it.
WELL, WHEN DOES THIS HAPPEN?
The contest period begins Monday, November 14th. All entries must be received by Kids Code Mississippi by 5 p.m. on Friday, December 16th. Winners will be announced in January when school resumes following the holiday break.
SO WHAT IF WE WIN?
Two runner-up winners will receive an MCM Electronics Raspberry Pi 2 Model B starter kits. The Grand Prize winner will receive a LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 Core Set with Software Pack for your classroom! All three winners will also receive a pizza party on us!
