MBEA January Post

26 Jan

Good afternoon,

I trust your semester is off to a wonderful start.  It is hard to believe that the month is nearly over.  Before we can blink our eyes, it will be spring.  Testing will begin, and summer will be upon us.  Time is flying!

Just a few updates – as many of you know, I am the secretary for the Southern Business Education Association, our regional organization comprised of 12 states.  Currently, several things are happening.  One is we are attempting to update our directory of members.  If you are a member of NBEA and SBEA, please share your contact information for updating.  Second, we are planning the annual fall conference for the region.  Not only are we looking for you to attend, but more importantly, we are wanting you to present sessions and consider serving in leadership roles.  One important position to be filled is on the Leadership Committee.  The person must be able to attend SBEA in October and will assist with the awards process.

Another need for service is with our affiliation to MS ACTE.  There are several committee positions to be filled:  awards, publications, and membership to name a few.  These committees meet usually once per year in Jackson before the annual conference.  Much of the work prior to the conference can be handled for most committees online.

With these needs stated, I would like to encourage EVERYONE to consider serving in some capacity.  All of us have something valuable to contribute to our organization, and we should wish to help grow our membership and ourselves.  Service is a great way to indicate your willingness to grow professionally.  As our SBEA president stated, this is a great time “to get your feet wet.”

If you are interested in serving on one of the committees mentioned above or possibly helping our president-elect Christy Ferguson with organizing our fall conference in September, please let me know. I will be happy to share your willingness to help with her.  I look forward to hearing from many of you soon.

At this point I wish to share with you a couple of tools that I found online.  Sometimes I am looking for something (free, of course) to assist me in some way with completing various tasks.  Some items I located are provided below for you.

  1. CuePrompter is a free online teleprompter. If you are having students present and you wish to help them not do the “and uh” speech, consider CuePrompter.  It is very user friendly.  http://cueprompter.com/
  2. SCRATCH is another free program. It can be used for creating games, animations, stories, and more.  Simple coding is used in this as well.  https://scratch.mit.edu/
  3. 30 Boxes is a calendar tool. You can track headlines from various sources like RSS feeds. The information can added to your Facebook page or Google calendar for sharing.  So, should you wish to let students know when a project may be due or populating material for a “Do Now” type of activity at the start of class, this might be of help to you.  http://30boxes.com/welcome.php

Stay safe and warm as we progress through our winter months.  I am sure many of us are looking forward to warmer weather.   Remember – MBEA IS IT!  We want to be innovative educators who integrate technology and multiple strategies into our classrooms.
