PACE Message – Middle School Curricula Educators and MDOT Info

02 Sep

Dear Secondary Principals,

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is planning for the state’s fourth annual Mississippi Bridge Building Competition.  They are looking for teachers to sponsor teams comprised of three students each. Students will be divided into three classes: Grades 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12 with three winning teams from each division. Awards for the winning teams include $200 for each student on the first place winning team, $100 for each member of the second place team, and $50 for each member of the third place team. MDOT requests that all principals please share this email with grades 7-12 mathematics and science teachers in ICT II, STEM, engineering, or other courses who might be interested in entering the competition.

Participation has increased each year of the competition. This year team sponsors who did not receive Bridge Building training in 2014 or 2015 in Jackson must attend one of the training days listed in the attached application. Bridge materials and instructions will be given during the training.  The deadline for teachers to submit the application is October 1st.

For the competition, MDOT will provide building supplies for the bridges, travel (minimum state rates of $.35 per mile not to exceed $175 per team), one night’s lodging on April 24 at the Marriot in Pearl, and breakfast and lunch for the teams. The competition will be held at the Muse Center in Pearl.

If you have any questions, please contact Linda Clifton,  at lkclift@bellsouth.net

Thanks so much
