2COOL4 and LMS4FCS Courses

07 Mar

This message is to advise that the COOL certification course required for licensure has been revised and updated to meet the ever changing needs of our educators.  MDE has provided recommendations to the RCU for the newly released COOL certification course.  Based on areas of expertise and work, the COOL courses are renamed and have new topics that are specific to educator needs.  Please read the following breakdowns of new course names and general topics for the respective COOL certification course.

All COOL courses are 6 weeks long.  They are strictly online using our state adopted learning management system (LMS).  Work is released weekly with the expectation that assignments are completed before the next week begins.  Participants complete the assignments at their own pace during the week.  The facilitator will grade submitted assignments and make comments accordingly.

2COOL4Pathways is for our non-technology course educators. Some of the key topics for participants include

  • How to integrate technology and the LMS into the curriculum
  • Importance of FERPA and the Mississippi Code of Ethics
  • Flipped Classroom, Assessment
  •  Copyright and Common Core
  • Complete a final project

2COOL4Middle School is for our technology course educators.  Some of the key topics for participants include

  • How to integrate technology and the LMS into the curriculum
  • Importance of FERPA and the Mississippi Code of Ethics
  • Online Instructional Best Practices
  • Skype
  •  Copyright and Common Core
  • Complete a  final project

2COOL4Counselors is for our state counselors.  Some of the key topics for participants include

  • How to integrate technology and the LMS into school counseling
  • Importance of FERPA and the Mississippi Code of Ethics
  • Counselors as Test Coordinators
  • Data – Looking at Data and Interpreting It
  • Bullying
  • Copyright and Common Core
  • Complete a final project

2COOL4Administrators is for our state administrators.  Some of the key topics for participants include

  • How to integrate technology and the LMS into daily administrative duties
  • Importance of FERPA and the Mississippi Code of Ethics
  • Instructional Coaches and Professional Learning Communities
  • Copyright and Common Core
  • Complete a final project

Family and Consumer Science (FCS) educators will complete the course called LMS4FCS.  The course is 4 weeks long and is strictly online with assignments released and completed weekly.  Educators will learn basics of working with the state LMS.  A final project will be completed by the participant.

Also, with the new COOL initiative, we are implementing a technology literacy module.  This module will assist the Pathway educator, Counselors, Administrators, and FCS educator with meeting the technology literacy requirement for endorsement.  Upon successful completion of the new COOL course for your area, you will be COOL certified AND have the technology piece for licensure met.  (Middle school or technology instructors must still be IC3 certified.)

****Disclaimer****

No longer are educators who need COOL certification required to complete Canvas Fundamentals before entering the COOL course.  All COOL participants will still complete a final project that uses the Canvas learning management system (LMS).  However, if an educator believes extra training is needed to learn how to use Canvas before taking COOL, a course called LMS Basics is available.
